British Army soldiers' pay is set by the Ministry of Defence following annual recommendations from the independent Armed Forces Pay Review Body (AFPRB). From April 2025, the pay award was 4.5% across all ranks. A new Private joining straight from basic training starts at £23,278 per year in basic pay; however, the total remuneration package (including subsidised accommodation, food allowances, and the non-contributory Armed Forces Pension Scheme) is significantly more valuable than the basic pay figure alone suggests. Officers follow a separate pay scale that starts higher and advances more rapidly with rank.
Based on typical army soldier salaries, here is what you can expect to take home after income tax and National Insurance:
- Private / Junior Soldier (entry): £20,281 take-home (£23,278 gross, outside London) / £23,836 take-home (£28,215 gross, London)
- Corporal / Sergeant: £33,617 take-home (£41,800 gross, outside London) / £38,081 take-home (£48,000 gross, London)
- Staff Sergeant / Warrant Officer: £39,964 take-home (£50,700 gross, outside London) / £43,908 take-home (£57,500 gross, London)
