Army Soldier Pay UK 2025/26

British Army soldiers' pay is set by the Ministry of Defence following annual recommendations from the independent Armed Forces Pay Review Body (AFPRB). From April 2025, the pay award was 4.5% across all ranks. A new Private joining straight from basic training starts at £23,278 per year in basic pay; however, the total remuneration package (including subsidised accommodation, food allowances, and the non-contributory Armed Forces Pension Scheme) is significantly more valuable than the basic pay figure alone suggests. Officers follow a separate pay scale that starts higher and advances more rapidly with rank.

Based on typical army soldier salaries, here is what you can expect to take home after income tax and National Insurance:

  • Private / Junior Soldier (entry): £20,281 take-home (£23,278 gross, outside London) / £23,836 take-home (£28,215 gross, London)
  • Corporal / Sergeant: £33,617 take-home (£41,800 gross, outside London) / £38,081 take-home (£48,000 gross, London)
  • Staff Sergeant / Warrant Officer: £39,964 take-home (£50,700 gross, outside London) / £43,908 take-home (£57,500 gross, London)

How Army Soldier Pay Works in the UK

  • Published basic pay figures do not include the value of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme (AFPS 15), free healthcare, subsidised accommodation (SINGLIES or SFA), or food; the total package is widely estimated to be 40–50% more valuable than civilian equivalent roles
  • A Private reaches the top of their pay spine (Level 7: £27,145) after seven annual increments; promotion to Lance Corporal opens the next spine at £30,815–£34,920
  • London Supplement is paid to service personnel posted at London District units; the rate is approximately £4,940/year (2025/26), explaining the London salary differential
  • The X-Factor, a pensionable supplement historically paid to compensate for the unique demands of military service, has been incorporated into the published pay scales since 2016
  • Army Reserve soldiers are paid pro-rata for training days and deployments; daily rates range from approximately £85/day for a Private to £240+/day for a Warrant Officer
  • Officer pay scales are separate: a newly commissioned Second Lieutenant starts at approximately £32,988; a Major earns £57,500–£75,000; a Lieutenant Colonel earns £78,000–£94,000
